Drake Maye has received rave reviews in the Patriots locker room for his leadership abilities and quality character early in his NFL career.

An anecdote told by his high school football coach helps shed light on how one of May’s selfless character traits is already evident on Sundays.

The Patriots have released a new mini-documentary documenting Maye’s journey from North Carolina to the NFL, including stories from Maye’s brothers, parents and former coaches.

In the video, May’s high school football coach, Scott Chadwick, tells the story of May checking the stats at halftime of his football games. Only he didn’t look at his completed passes, passing yards or touchdowns.

“My middle son was our stats guy, and I told him something about ‘what is Drake doing?’” Chadwick said. “He was like, ‘Dad, he doesn’t look at his stats, he looks at how many balls each guy caught in the first half.’ And then he would come to me and suggest games where the guys who didn’t catch many balls could get a few balls.

“He was always concerned about making sure everyone was happy.”

Maye has only one NFL start, but already it appears he’s putting in the same effort to keep his offensive players happy in New England.

According to Taylor Kyles of PatriotsCLNS, the Patriots had a season-high with eight different receivers with multiple targets against the Texans. DeMario Douglas was May’s favorite target, with nine passes thrown his way. He, along with Kayshawn Boutte, caught their first career touchdown passes in May’s first game.

So, of course, May is still just as active in trying to make her Patriots teammates happy as she was in high school.

Maye will look for his first win leading the New England offense on Sunday when the Patriots take on the Jaguars in London. The game will air at 9:30 a.m. ET.
