Dumka: Tragic diarrhea outbreak claims the lives of three tribal women in Dumka | Ranchi News

Three tribal women died of “diarrhea” in Dumka village

Dumka: Among the three there was a woman and her daughter-in-law tribal women who died under suspicion diarrhea V Sonadhab village in Shikaripara block of Dumka district for the last three days.
The deceased women were identified as Lukhi Marandi (55), sister-in-law Bahamuni Murmu (23) and Chintamani Hembre (35).
They complained of vomiting and stomach upset. While Chintamani died when he was taken to a medical center on Thursday, Lukhi and Bahamuni died at home on Friday, area residents said.
On Friday, district authorities sent a team of doctors to the village. Civil Surgeon (CS) Dr Bachha Prasad Singh said, “None of the deceased were taken to a doctor or admitted to a government hospital. Therefore, we cannot determine the cause of their death. Six people with similar symptoms were rushed to Phulo Jano Medical College and Hospital where their condition is stable.”
“On October 13, a fair was organized in this area. The victims may have consumed adulterated food and suffered from food poisoning,” added Dr. Singh.
Local residents, however, claimed that the village’s well water was contaminated and hand pumps had not been working for months. “The entire village depends on the well, the water of which is polluted,” said resident Bablu Murmu.
Meanwhile, sources at Phulo Jano Medical College and Hospital said, “Three people were admitted to the hospital on Friday with complaints of diarrhea. Two were treated and discharged on Saturday, and the only patient hospitalized is showing signs of improvement.”
Medical teams will continue to visit the village as a precautionary measure, Dr Singh said.
