WARSAW, Poland — A funeral home in Poland issued an unusual apology on Saturday after a body it was transporting fell out of a hearse and ended up in traffic.

Polish media reported that the man was driving down the street on Friday in Stalowa Wola, a city in southeastern Poland, when he first saw the sheet on his car window. When the sheet slid down, he saw a body lying on the road. For a moment, the driver was afraid that he had hit a man.

Local media published an image of a body lying on a pedestrian crossing with a white stripe where it fell from a hearse.

Hades Funeral Services, which transported the body, released a statement on Saturday claiming responsibility for the incident and blaming the hearse for a technical fault.

“It is with deep regret that we inform you that as a result of an unexpected technical malfunction of the electric rear door lock of the hearse during the transport of the body of the deceased, an unfortunate event occurred that does not reflect the high standards of our company, our deep sympathy for the families of the victims and the respect we always show to the deceased,” it says in a company statement posted on its website.

He apologized to “everyone who was disappointed and upset by this event.”
